WAPTUM was born in 2014 to offer professional services for community development projects to our Clients, the Cree communities of Eeyou Istchee. Since hydroelectric development and the creation of the James Bay highway in the 1970’s, these communities have been experiencing a period of rapid community growth, infrastructure improvements and economic development. Waptum was created to ensure that community development projects are environmentally, socially and economically sustainable, respect the unique culture and way-of-life of the Cree people and encourage the long-term social and economic independence of the Crees.
WAPTUM is 100% owned by Tawich Holdings Corporation, the economic development arm of the Cree Nation of Wemindji. Our corporate family includes local businesses, regional service providers and contruction companies, as well as investiment holdings.
